Pope Francis: A Shepherd of Love and Simplicity Enters Eternal Rest

On April 21, 2025, the world said goodbye to Pope Francis, the first Latin American pontiff in history. He passed away at the age of 88 following a cerebral stroke. His death marks the end of an era defined by humility, compassion, and a heartfelt connection with believers’ everyday lives.

Yet for Pope Francis, death was never a cause for fear. Just two months ago, he wrote a touching reflection in the preface of Cardinal Angelo Scola’s book Awaiting a New Beginning. There, he shared how death was not an end but the start of something far more beautiful. “It is a new beginning,” he wrote. “Eternal life is something we have never fully lived before: eternity.”

This sentiment captures much of what made Pope Francis a unique and beloved leader—his profound faith in the life to come and his deep concern for the present moment.

A Simple Life Lived for Others

Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Argentina, became known not for grand gestures but for simple acts of love. His papacy often brought him closer to people than protocol would allow.

From his modest residence at the Domus Santa Marta to his habit of personally welcoming guests at his door, Francis remained a pastor at heart.

Cardinal Grzegorz Rys recalled how the pope’s liturgies were short, his words straightforward, and his presence deeply human. “He always waited at the door… and escorted everyone to the elevator,” he said. That attention to detail wasn’t about formality but about dignity—making others feel seen and valued.

Even in his final appearance, just days before his passing, he offered a blessing to the crowds in St. Peter’s Square from the popemobile, continuing to fulfil his role as shepherd to the very end.

The Final Days and Funeral Arrangements

Following his death, Pope Francis’ body was laid in state in St. Peter’s Basilica. Dressed in red vestments and holding a rosary, he rests now in peace, surrounded by the prayers of millions. His funeral will take place on Saturday, April 26, in St. Peter’s Square. The Vatican expects over 300,000 mourners to gather and say farewell.

The traditional Confirmation of the Death of the Pontiff ceremony was held on the night of his passing. The Fisherman’s ring, once a sign of his authority, was broken, and the seal of his papal office was retired. As is tradition, these symbols will be buried with him.

A Pope Who Listened Deeply

Many who have worked closely with Francis will remember him for his extraordinary ability to listen. British Cardinal Timothy Radcliffe described him as someone with a “profound desire to make everybody feel welcome.”

Cardinal Vincent Nichols noted that mercy and compassion were the heart of his ministry. “Only in understanding God’s love and mercy towards each one of us can we build communities that reflect God’s kingdom,” he said.

A Life That Reflected Resurrection Hope

Pope Francis died on Easter Monday, a day that celebrates the victory of life over death. Cardinal Nichols saw this as no coincidence. “It’s almost as if the risen Lord came to Pope Francis and said, ‘Right, home.'” This image of Christ calling one of His most devoted servants into eternal rest brings comfort to many.

Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa also spoke of Francis’ legacy as one marked by closeness to the poor and a deep desire for peace. His concern wasn’t for politics but for people—for those who were overlooked, forgotten, or suffering.

Looking Ahead With Gratitude

Though the conclave to elect a new pope won’t begin for several weeks, the Church now enters a period of mourning and reflection. Cardinals and believers alike give thanks for the life of a man who walked closely with Christ and invited others to do the same.

Pope Francis leaves behind more than a legacy—he leaves a living memory of a faith that was simple, strong, and full of hope. His words, “Death is a new beginning,” now echo with new meaning as we celebrate his life and trust in the promise he believed so deeply.

He may be gone, but his voice, his smile, and his heart remain with us.
