Emmy-winning actor Paul Walter Hauser bravely opened up on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” last week.
He revealed how his faith ignited a remarkable life transformation and fueled the restoration of his marriage.
Hailing from Grand Rapids, Michigan, Hauser built his career through small independent films and stand-up comedy.
Early roles showcased his ability to portray quirky yet relatable characters, charming audiences with humor and vulnerability.
Despite his undeniable talent and dedication, Hauser wrestled with deep personal struggles. It included a battle with addiction that threatened to destroy his career.
He urged viewers to seek out his “I Am Second” YouTube videos, calling them a “beautiful story” of resilience and redemption.
Hauser and his wife, Amy, bared their souls in four “I Am Second” videos, offering an honest account of their journey.
This non-profit organization serves as a platform to share the faith stories of public figures.
Reflecting on past mistakes and confronting inner demons
Haunted by his past choices, Paul shared with a touch of regret, “I’ll never get that time back.”
He expressed remorse for robbing his wife of precious moments.
The couple bravely recounts overcoming deep personal battles, rediscovering their faith in Christ, and ultimately healing their fractured relationship.
Their story stands as a powerful testament to the transformative power of faith.
Known for his roles in “I, Tonya,” Hauser recently won an Emmy for his haunting performance in “Black Bird.” This award came amidst a storm of personal turmoil.
“I was in a rough place,” he confessed to Colbert on his show, “not living up to my potential.”
Playing the role of a deeply disturbed character in the spiritually complex city of New Orleans proved to be an unexpected catalyst for change.
The darkness of his role forced him to confront his own inner demons.
“No matter how far you stray, Jesus always pursues you”
In his “I Am Second” YouTube videos, Hauser revealed his decision to seek better role models.
“I admired people like the band Switchfoot or Stephen Colbert – they live out their faith,” he admitted.
Inspired, he explained, “They believe in Jesus but also express their faith through creative work. I felt called to do the same – to honor my faith while pursuing a path different from my family’s.”
This realization fueled decisive action: “That’s when I chose to get sober during filming and begin therapy.”
He highlighted his ‘I Am Second’ bracelet, encouraging viewers to watch his and Amy’s videos.
“It’s a beautiful story,” he emphasized, “where we honestly confront our struggles, the path to healing, and our reunion.”
In the “I Am Second” videos, Hauser bravely exposes his past pain – from battling alcohol abuse and suicidal thoughts to initiating a devastating divorce while Amy was pregnant.
His breakthrough came when he embraced Christ.
Reflecting on the journey, Amy shares, “It’s a story of two broken people….a story about faith, love, a lot of laughter. And it’s a story that no matter how far you stray, Jesus always pursues you, and you are never beyond His reach.”
