Russell Brand is known for his wild past, quick wit, and controversial opinions. But today, he speaks with a different tone—a tone filled with awe, humility, and deep faith. The British actor and comedian has undergone a transformation that many find hard to ignore. He says he was saved—not by therapy, fame, or willpower—but by Jesus Christ.
It didn’t happen overnight.
For years, Brand sought meaning through fame, drugs, sex, and even new-age spirituality. He looked everywhere but still felt empty. At one point, he even believed he could be a version of Jesus himself. “I thought, why not? Why not be the incarnation of God on Earth?” he admitted. That illusion, like many others, would soon crumble.
Falling apart to be put back together
Brand has spoken about his long battle with addiction. Heroin, crack, and other destructive obsessions ruled his life. But he now sees that even in those darkest moments, God was present.
“The Lord has peeled away many, many obsessions,” he said. “You can’t change yourself. But you can be changed.”
This truth hit him deeply. At times, he still forgets it, falling back into old patterns of control and ego. But he’s learning to live differently now—not by optimizing his life the way culture tells him to, but by surrendering it to God.
The power of surrender
One of the biggest changes in Russell Brand’s life came seven months before his public testimony—his baptism.
That moment wasn’t just symbolic. It was real, and it marked the beginning of a new chapter.
“I’ve always loved Jesus,” he said. “But something changed. Christ cracked through hard. And everything else fell away.”
It wasn’t the idea of Jesus, some myth, or a collection of stories that moved him. It was the actual presence of Christ—the living Christ.
When the pain came, Jesus remained
Brand has experienced deep personal loss, emotional chaos, and the crumbling of many of his idols.
“When the last round of deaths came—personal deaths—what was there? Jesus Christ. Literally. Jesus Christ was there.”
He began to dive into scripture. The stories that once seemed far away began to feel alive. The Book of Acts became real to him. The early disciples’ passion and urgency began to make sense.
Brand started asking new questions:
“Why were they doing this?”
“What happened to them after the resurrection that changed everything?”
The answers always pointed back to the same truth—Jesus rose from the dead, and the power that raised Him is alive today.
The danger of self-worship
Russell Brand now critiques the culture he once fully embraced.
He believes that when God is removed from the centre of life, something else always takes His place—and often, that “something” is the self.
“You can’t be unhappy unless you’re in self,” he said. “When I’m obsessed with myself—whether it’s thinking I’m great or that I’m worthless—I lose sight of others. And I lose sight of God.”
He warns against a world that glorifies personal fulfilment above all. A world that says, “You’re worth it,” but forgets to say, “You were made by Him.”
Brand’s new path
Russell Brand no longer sees life as a journey toward self-discovery or personal greatness. Instead, he sees it as a calling to holiness.
“To be holy is all there is,” he says. “And I say that after trying everything else. Fame, drugs, sex—I’ve tried it. Now I know Jesus Christ is the answer.”
His message isn’t polished or perfect. He doesn’t pretend to have it all figured out.
But his story powerfully reminds us that no one is beyond redemption. No matter how lost someone seems, God can break through.
Even in the chaos. Even after years of running.
God saved Russell Brand—not just from addiction or despair—but from himself.
And He can do the same for anyone willing to let go.
