It has only been a little more than a week since For King & Country released its fifth studio album, “What Are We Waiting For?,” but the record has already made it to the top of the American Christian Albums chart.
Prior to the release, the two brothers of For King & Country dropped two singles, “Relate” and “For God is With Us,” in August and September.
Luke Smallbone, who makes up half of the duo, recently said to the Christian Post that different kinds of pressures people felt because of the COVID-19 pandemic inspired them to make the album.
“I think that over the last couple of years, we have very quickly realized that it has been a strange time. A lot of the things that I think the pandemic has brought up are questions like, ‘I have got dormant dreams that have been laying in my heart and my mind, and life is fragile. Why am I not chasing them?’” Luke Smallbone asked and continued:
“I think that is one thing that people are asking. I think another thing that people are asking themselves is, ‘I have held bitterness and resentment to whoever it might be. Why am I holding on to that?’ When life is as fragile as seemingly it has been illustrated by the last couple years, these are questions that we all need to be asking ourselves.”
Luke Smallbone hopes that listeners not only ask themselves questions but also find answers and take action.
“We say hurtful things when we have been hurt ourselves”
Luke Smallbone also revealed why they called their album “What Are We Waiting For?”
“One of the reasons why we named the album ‘What Are We Waiting For’is because I think that answer is different for every single person. The things that I may be waiting for, the things that you may be waiting for, are different. That is why I think it is important to ask,” he explained.
One of the songs on the new album is “Broken Halos,” which For King & Country hopes will make listeners realize their need for God.
“We look at the last couple years, it became very clear that if you are on this side of the street, I am going to be on this side of the street, and there is just no middle ground for anything,” Luke Smallbone said.
“I remember seeing posts on social media of people saying, ‘Well, if you do not do this, and then you are this and then that, we have known each other for 15 years, I am no longer your friend anymore.’ I was like, ‘What are we doing? Are we an elementary school here?'” he added.
Luke Smallbone even saw friends on social media platforms who gave other friends ultimatums if they were not of the same opinion as themselves.
“I think that is heartbreaking to me that everybody has got reasons for saying the things that they say. But at the end of the day, we say hurtful things when we have been hurt ourselves,” he explained.
