A few months back, actor Corbin Bernsen announced his departure from projects categorized as “faith-based” movies.
Instead, he’s choosing to concentrate on projects that portray the entirety of life, encompassing both joys and heartaches.
Some time back, Bernsen unveiled a six-episode documentary named “Journey of Faith,” currently streaming exclusively on PureFlix.
The series delves into Bernsen’s 2010 film “Rust,” encapsulating his “most personal project yet” in the realm of filmmaking.
“I didn’t know what I was going to do with it,” Bernsen said, referring to the series. “Then Sony calls up and says … all of a sudden, ‘We’d like to get involved. Are you a Christian filmmaker?’ ‘Yes, I am,’” he replied, “without reservation.”
Despite being from Los Angeles, he never identified as a faith-based actor. However, the personal story compelled him to participate.
“I was writing a story about after I lost my father, a midlife crisis story, and lo and behold, we made this thing,” he continued.
The actor, who most recently starred in the latest installment of “Left Behind,” explained that he strives for authenticity. He won’t forcefully promote Christianity in his films or in person. He aims for organic expression.
Brensen elaborated that what one can glean from his words is that being authentic and being loving is essential.
He shared, “Now I see the love is for God. For some people, it might be just nature. They go out to nature, and I go, ‘You get it, you’re fine.’ Because they’re plugged into what I know as God.”
Embracing Life’s Tapestry in Art and Faith
The actor gained fame as lawyer Arnold Becker in “L.A. Law” during the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Growing up in an entertainment-oriented environment with parents immersed in the industry, Bernsen developed a profound passion for acting.
Bernsen, recognized for his recent performance in “Left Behind,” imparts a profound perspective. He believes that love, particularly for God, lies at the essence of our existence.
He acknowledges that this connection may manifest through nature for some, and he wholeheartedly accepts this diversity of beliefs.
Despite being raised in the entertainment industry by actor parents, he explains why he’s shifting away from traditional “faith-based” movies.
Moreover, Bernsen finds faith-based films limiting due to imposed messages or expected spiritual transformations.
He aims for authentic storytelling, delving into the gamut of human emotions—love, hate, greed, anger, pain, and forgiveness.
He seeks to capture life’s authenticity, encouraging embracing it fully and finding a divine encounter in its raw reality.
Furthermore, while he affirms his love for Jesus and His teachings, Bernsen is open-minded about people’s personal beliefs.
He expresses that his project, “Journey of Faith,” is intended to entertain the Christian audience rather than preach or evangelize.
He steers clear of “faith-based” labels, preferring stories that honor the intricate human journey’s complexity and depth.
In essence, Bernsen advocates for narratives encompassing the entire human experience—the highs and lows, joys and sorrows.
He thinks embracing life entirely leads to a genuine connection with a higher power, no matter how one perceives it.
