Harrison Butker Stands Firm Amid Controversy Over Viral Speech 

Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker stands firm amid calls for cancellation over his viral commencement speech at Benedictine College.

He addressed the issue publicly at the Regina Caeli Academy’s Courage Under Fire gala in Nashville, Tennessee. At the gala, Butker passionately defended his speech criticizing President Joe Biden, abortion, and other significant issues.

Despite intense scrutiny and backlash, Butker emphasized his unwavering commitment to his faith and the right to free speech.

He highlighted the relevance of the gala’s theme, “Courage Under Fire,” which aptly described his current situation. Butker noted support from those who, despite disagreeing, defended his right to express his beliefs.

“If it wasn’t clear that the timeless Catholic values are hated by many, it is now,” Butker said. “Over the past few days, my beliefs — or what people think I believe — have been the focus of countless discussions around the globe.”

He noted initial hate but also support from those who, despite disagreeing, defended his right to religious freedom.

“At the outset, many people expressed a shocking level of hate. But, as the days went on, even those who disagreed with my viewpoints shared their support for my freedom of religion,” Butker said.

Butker discussed his decision to openly share his Catholic faith, stating he does “not regret at all” despite potential backlash. He stressed the importance of standing by his faith rather than seeking the world’s approval.

“If we have truth and charity, we should trust in the Lord’s providence and let the Holy Ghost do the rest of the work,” he said. “It is not people but Jesus Christ who I am trying to please.”

A Message to Female Graduates Sparks Debate

His commencement speech which sparked the controversy, included remarks specifically aimed at female graduates. He praised their achievements and addressed the pressures and expectations society places on women.

“For the ladies present today: congratulations on an amazing accomplishment. You should be proud of all that you have achieved to this point in your young lives,” Butker said.

He continued, “I want to speak directly to you, briefly, because I think it is you, the women, who have had the most diabolical lies told to you.

“How many of you are sitting here now about to cross this stage and are thinking about all the promotions and titles you are going to get in your career? Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world.”

Butker added,“I can tell you that my beautiful wife Isabelle would be the first to say that her life truly started when she began living her vocation as a wife and as a mother. I’m on this stage today and able to be the man I am because I have a wife who leans into her vocation.”

Despite a Change.org petition calling for Butker’s firing reaching around 227,000 signatures, it has begun to lose momentum. The petition quickly rallied hundreds of thousands against Butker and his free speech rights but has since stalled.

Nonetheless, Butker remains steadfast, prioritizing his faith and the values he holds dear over public approval. Harrison Butker’s unwavering stance serves as a testament to his commitment to his faith and beliefs.
