The Hollywood actor Tom Hanks is renowned for being a remarkably humble, down-to-earth guy, and that might be the result of him growing up in a religious setting. As a child, his parents split and remarried, each with their own religious beliefs, so as he grew up, he was exposed to various religions. By that point, Tom found God and identified with a variety of ideologies, including Evangelicalism, Catholicism and Mormonism.
“The major religion I was exposed to in the first ten years of my life was Catholicism. My stepmother became a Mormon,” he told George Magazine.
“My aunt, who I lived with for a long time, was a Nazarene, which is kind of ultra-super Methodist, and in high school, all my friends were Jews. For years, I went to Wednesday-night Bible studies with my church group. So, I had this peripatetic overview of various faiths, and the one thing I got from that was the intellectual pursuit involved. There was a lot of great stuff to think about,” the actor added.
After marrying Rita Wilson in 1988, Tom Hanks later became a member of the Greek Orthodox church. He has said that he likes being Orthodox because the setting encourages him to meditate and think about bigger issues. His faith grew the most at this point.
Tom Hanks considers his relationship with God a very private subject when it comes to his beliefs about God. His beliefs have a lot to do with how he was reared.
He attends church regularly and is deeply religious. In the past, he has said that he attends church to answer the great unanswered questions mankind has always had.
The Hanks family has overcome many challenges due to their faith in God
Tom and Rita Hanks are both devout Christians, and their faith helped them through one of the most difficult years of their marriage.
Rita Hanks underwent a double mastectomy in 2015 after being diagnosed with breast cancer, and their son Chet Hanks battled substance abuse.
At the same time, Tom had Type-2 Diabetes and battled with its side effects. He was also sued due to the actions of his son. Despite all they were going through, Tom and Rita Hanks relied on their faith for strength and hope.
In an interview with the New York Times, Rita Hanks praised her husband for his commitment during her battle with cancer.
“You never know how your spouse is going to react in a situation like this… I was so amazed, so blown away by the care my husband gave me… Who knew it would make you even closer?” she said.
She eventually became cancer-free after many prayers and a successful surgery.
