Burgeoning gospel star Koryn Hawthorne just released her second album, “I Am,” and celebrated it by also dropping a new single titled “How Great.”
The new single features the Christian singer-songwriter Matt Maher and contains references to the famous Christian hymn “How Great Thou Art,” which Koryn Hawthorne sang when she participated in The Voice five years ago.
That song gave her her first number one track on Billboard’s Hot Gospel Songs chart in 2015.
With “I Am,” she is ready to conquer the charts again.
“The album is entitled ‘I Am’ because my journey has come full circle. I am who God says I am. I am called to be everything that He has called me to be. I pray that people step into their calling. I pray that this album turns hearts towards God. That when you go deeper and discover Him, you will discover yourself,“ she says.
The new album is a mix of gospel music, pop, R&B and hip hop and has Steffany Gretzinger as well as gospel superstar Jonathan McReynolds on its tracklist.
Coached by Christina Aguilera and Pharrell Williams
As mentioned earlier, Koryn Hawthorne broke through on the tv talent show The Voice in 2015.
The concept of The Voice is that the artist’s vocal performance weighs higher than how the contestant acts on stage – at least to begin with.
Koryn Hawthorne first appeared on the show on March 3rd, 2015 when she sang “My Kind of Love” by Emeli Sandé. As always, all four judges sat with their backs toward the contestant on stage in order to focus on the voice.
If a judge likes what she or he hears, she or he turns around, and the singer then chooses which team it wants to join.
Both Christina Aguilera and Pharrell Williams turned when they heard Koryn Hawthorne sing, and she chose to join Christina Aguilera’s team. Thereby she got her as her coach.
The collaboration only lasted 20 days, though, as Koryn Hawthorne was about to be eliminated from the show but was then saved by Pharrell Williams and joined his team.
Koryn Hawthorne made it to the final, where she finished fourth.
Debuted at number one
After finishing The Voice, Koryn Hawthorne joined Sony Music’s gospel music division, RCA Inspiration, and released a self-titled EP in 2017.
The EP, for instance, contained “Won’t He Do It,” which reached number one on three of Billboard’s gospel charts.
A year later, she released her debut album, “Unstoppable,” which also made it to the tops of the American gospel charts.
Throughout her career, Koryn Hawthorne has won five awards, and it has just been announced that she is nominated for a Billboard Award in the category Top Gospel Artist.
The award show takes place on October 14th.
